MARICOPA ADVOCACY
The Maricopa Emergency Medicine Residency took its first organized steps into community service! On august 15th, the EM program provided free sports physicals to 40 inner city school children, just in time for them to take the fields at their local schools. The residents provided eye checks, height and weight, physical exams and even urinalysis. The event was led by two of the Maricopa PGY-3 residents, Drs. Chris May and Erin Kelly, and was done in partnership with St. Vincent De Paul’s Clinic. Residents from all years of training participated, as did two faculty, rotating medical students, and even an OB/GYN resident who was rotating in the ED.
Lessons learned: With 5 exam rooms, EM residents can do a sports physical faster than anyone predicts. We anticipate scheduling twice the number next year. Morning appointments are a 50/50 shot to be kept. Afternoon ones are very likely to be kept. The students all spoke English well. The parents often only spoke Spanish. When giving out granola bars, the chocolate chip will go first, followed by the peanut butter. The oatmeal raisin ones will be ignored.
The ED initiative into advocacy will continue on September 30th, when our guest lecturer Dr. Walthall will be talking on community and political advocacy, and host a round table discussion of the topics.
We are proud of all those who participated and look forward to continuing this trend!
