I was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. I did my undergraduate at Ohio State and went to medical school at NEOUCOM which is in a very small Ohio town. Each time I dug my car out of the snow I kicked myself for not going to medical school somewhere in the Caribbean. After all the blizzards this interview season, I decided to come the Copa even though the weather gave them such an unfair advantage. I don't think anyone here even knows what lake effect snow is. I really love being outside in my free time. I played tennis in undergrad and just ran my first marathon. I'm also really excited to go to the pool in January. If anyone wants to teach me rock climbing, I think that might be my next endeavor. I'm also a huge Buckeye fan and I love football season. Right now my favorite basket ball team is whoever is playing the Heat.
I grew up in Logan, Utah and have bounced around the nation and Latin America since then. After finishing up undergrad at BYU I moved to Los Angeles, and took a job as a venture capitalist, meaning I surfed as much as possible and worked when necessary. In LA I met my wife Amy and somehow became more interested in my long term career goals. I learned many great things in Texas, including phrases such as “ustacould,” “mightcould,’ “I’m fixin’ to have a heart attack,” and the all famous “Son, you from around here?” (meaning Texas). My reply, “No, but I got here as soon as I could!” That one wins a lot of friends! After riding the coattails of my older brother and becoming nicknamed “Baby Betz” I ended up here at the Copa, and couldn’t be happier about it!
Hi everyone, my name is Tyler. I’m an Arizona native and I think this state is amazing. I love the winters/not summers, and the way it smell after it rains. There are tons of fun things to do here during summer. Getting into your car is not one of them. My interests include traveling, exercising, reading, movies, my pet tree, spending time with family and friends, and all things in moderation, even moderation.
I was introduced to the Copa early in my medical career. I worked nearby on an ambulance for 5 years before medical school and was responsible for bringing in to the ED many of the patients wearing matching wrist bracelets and chic shirts and slacks with horizontal stripes (I hear it’s all the rage in the states).
There is a special sense of humor here as well as a genuinely friendly atmosphere that is truly unique. I feel incredibly fortunate to be here, and I’m very excited for the next three years. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to email me.
My name is Nathan Chin. I am from the Republic of Palau. (As you are unlikely to have heard of it, Google: Jellyfish Lake, Survivor: Season 10 or rock islands.) I spend a lot of my free time there, but grew up in different parts of the world because of my father’s work while in the U.S. Army. I am really excited to be here in Phoenix because of the amazing residents, attendings and staff … but also because I can work on my lackluster golf game and watch professional sports year-round. If you have any questions, please ask!
I was born and raised in the Phoenix area and spent most of my summers swimming, paintballing, and paying $3 to golf (terribly) in 115 degree heat. After high school I moved south to Tucson where for over a decade I attended The University of Arizona. While at the U of A I completed my undergrad, master’s, and medical degrees and relentlessly cheered on the Wildcats. Despite having some great times in the “Old Pueblo,” I am very excited to finally return home to the Phoenix area and begin my EM career at Maricopa! I love mountain biking, paintball, poker, golf, racquetball, online gaming, hanging out with the wife, watching the Wildcats dominate, and practically any excuse to get outside and run around. With all that Phoenix and ‘Copa have to offer, I am definitely looking forward to the next 3 years!
I consider myself a local Arizona boy. Having grown up playing baseball and soccer in the deserts of southern California, I left at age thirteen to experience the Sonoran Desert in all its beauty and splendor. I was fortunate enough to achieve my dream of going to ASU for undergrad, and after four years in Baltimore, I’m excited to be back in Sun Devil country! When not soaking up wisdom from our faculty and patients at the ‘Copa, you will probably find me playing/watching sports, running, or training for my next adventure.
As an Arizona native I am so excited to be back! I spent the first 18 years of my life in the heart of Phoenix, Ahwatukee, just on the other side of South Mountain. I enjoyed my time at U of A for my undergrad, and am still a U of A fan at heart. I moved to Michigan for medical school with the intention of spending more time with family, and survived 3.5 cold winters. My dream is to never scrape ice from the inside of my car windshield again. I recently married my wife, who is an Ob/Gyn intern at Banner Good Sam and am still psyched we survived the couples match. I love food, particularly the very spicy variety, as well as anything in burrito form. I play guitar and sing, and will likely instigate some form of Copa rock band over the next 3 years.
“Hi, everybody ... I'm Dr. Nick.” I grew up all throughout Colorado, living the longest in Denver. After studying Art at BYU {insert sarcastic comment here} and spending two years in Italy, I had a short stint as a medical illustrator. I somehow tricked my wife Jenna into marrying me and reluctantly put my skis in storage as we moved to the east coast for med school at Virginia Commonwealth. I love my time out there, enjoyed the Atlantic Ocean and welcomed a little girl to my life, but am ready to be back West. I enjoy hanging out with my girls, traveling, golfing, and skiing. I'm excited to be here at the Copa, there is nowhere else I'd rather learn emergency medicine ... and let's not forget the added bonus of hoping to enjoy as much sunshine as residency hours and my fair-skinned genetic make-up will allow.
I grew up outside of Washington DC, and spent my first 22 years running around a soccer field. After a brief stint in the military, I will be forever grateful for air conditioning, soft mattresses, and washer and dryers. Unable to find a job that supports my biking and running habits, I returned to my family’s Hoosier roots to attend the Indiana University School of Medicine where I learned you can, in fact, deep fat fry anything. Upon graduating, I foiled my parent’s predictions of my future as a hamburger flipper at McDonalds, thus proving they don’t have the gift of sight. Armed with twenty bottles of +100 sunblock, I’m excited to start residency and enjoy the killer Arizona outdoors.
My name is Kolin Knapp and I was born and raised in Oklahoma City. I went to college at Denison University to play football because the Sooners were a little out of my league. I lived in Chicago for a year before moving back to Oklahoma for med school. During my first summer of school, I moved to Colorado to be a whitewater rafting guide and fell in love with the outdoors and was exposed to some cool emergency rescue situations. The faculty and my fellow residents make this program and I'm looking forward to spending the next couple years at the 'Copa.
I was raised on a country road in Idaho with horses and a 180 pound tub-of-love Saint Bernard. I spent my adolescent years obsessing over how I could finagle my next snow, skate, or wakeboard adventure. Once college was calling, I journeyed off to the Wasatch Mountain Range of Salt Lake City to play and study biochemistry.
Following graduation, I moved to Montana to be an EMT and wilderness instructor for troubled-teens. This in-turn inspired a backpacking saga through South America, and finally a move out east to Vermont for medical school. It was in Vermont that I made the scariest decision of my life... to defer school for a year and quell any uncertainties I had about a life in modern western medicine (aka; I needed to "settle down and grow up"). Fortunately, it turned out to be the best decision I ever made. The next year I enrolled, met my future fiancé (surgical intern down the road at St Josephs), and started the best 4 years of my life.
Today, I am stoked for the opportunity to live and train here at the Copa! While every facet of emergency medicine has me pumped, I am particularly excited to delve into trauma, critical care, pediatrics, and wilderness medicine. When not working/studying, I hope to continue playing music, mountain biking, backpacking, and making surf trips to California and Baja.
Feel free to write me with questions.
Hi everyone, my name is Pedro. I grew up in Long, Island, NY.....or shall I say "Longgguillan". Thankfully I don't have an accent. I graduated from Cornell University with a degree in biology and then went to medical school at Harvard. This was where my wife and I met. She was in dental school while I was in medical school. So, what brings me all the way to the desert you might ask? Well, after spending 2 years as a resident in orthopaedic surgery in Albany, NY, I saw the light and decided to switch to emergency medicine....best decision I ever made. After leaving Albany, I joined the Maricopa EM research department for the year while I was applying for EM residency. I had a great experience and was so excited when I found out I was going to be staying here for residency. My wife's family lives in the Phoenix area, so this was the perfect fit for us. We love to play play tennis, golf, hike and hang out with family and friends. I am excited to be a part of the Copa and look forward to a great 3 years!
I grew up in a small town in the hills of southern Illinois. I went to undergrad at Murray State University in Kentucky. I spent my last summer of college working at an outdoor adventure company in northern Wisconsin that specialized in kayaking trips on Lake Superior. After college, I was a high school chemistry teacher, head varsity boys track coach, and assistant football coach for 4 years. During this time span, I tried to travel as much as possible during my free time. My favorite place was New Zealand!! After 4 great years of med school in Illinois, I decided that I could definitely go without shoveling snow and so many cloudy days. My visit to Copa was great...left St Louis and it was 9 degrees, arrived in Phoenix and it was 70!! When I have time, I love to be outside...hiking, camping, running...also like traveling (just returned from Machu Picchu in Peru), sports, photography, movies, cooking/eating, good beer, SCUBA diving, and reading. I'm really looking forward to all the Phoenix area has to offer and being trained as a Copa EM resident! Please feel free to email me with any questions you have.
The story of Mike: I moved around some as a youngster due to my father’s brief Navy career, landing me in Japan for three years where I learned to read and write Japanese. It was a great experience until moving to Los Angels and being dumped in the English for a second language classes. Having survived the ESL trauma, I spent my formative years in Los Angeles body surfing and going to the occasional punk show. My summer job between high school and college, working as a lineman replacing telephone poles, lasted a bit longer than I anticipated. Along the way a beautiful wife, four wonderful kid, a mortgage and a couple of dogs. The summers kept getting hotter and the winters colder and I knew it was time to quit the summer job and get to college. Thankfully my family stuck with me through the roller coaster of college and then medical school in the Midwest. I am supper excited to be here in Phoenix and train at the Copa. The people are great, and I have three years to explore the great outdoors.
Medical School: Drexel University
I grew up in the deserts of southern California and got my undergrad degree at UCLA. I spent a year at Georgetown for a Master's degree and then headed to Philadelphia for medical school. After five years of east cost city living and cold winters, I was ready to come back west for warm weather and open spaces. I can definifely deal with the heat for year-round golf, cycling, and hiking. When time and money allow, I like to travel (who doesn't); my last trip was to the Philippines (the homeland) and Turkey. I'm not sure where the next trip will be, but Brazil 2014 for the World Cup is already marked on the calendar.
Medical School: Temple University School of Medicine
I grew up in Portland, OR where I spent most of my time wallowing in nature and greenery. I decided to leave Oregon for medical school in North Philadelphia, which was just a little bit of a change. East Coast humidity and freezing cold winters led me to the desert. I'm really excited to be exploring a new area of the country, and I am especially excited for 70 degrees in January! Some of my favorite things include traveling, hiking, camping, rafting, lounging, the color green, wine, fried pickles, and reading books for fun. Feel free to email me with any questions!
Medical School: Des Moines University
My name is Kimberly, but pretty much everyone calls me Kimber. I was born and raised in a small town in Wisconsin, where a traffic jam consisted of a few cars behind an Amish buggy or tractor. I spent my undergrad years playing basketball at UW-Milwaukee, spending time by the lake, and partaking in my share of Friday night Fish Fry's. I attended Des Moines University for medical school, and after one of the worst winters on record with 60-some inches of snow, decided it was definitely time to continue my training in a warmer climate! In my spare time I enjoy playing basketball, volleyball, running, having "kitty time" with my two cats, and am looking forward to hiking and exploring AZ. While I'll miss my Badgers and good WI beer, I'm very excited about being part of a wonderful program with such great people at the Copa! If you have any questions, let me know.
Medical School: Saint Louis University
My first exposure to the emergency department came at the age of one when my parents found me holding a can of turpentine with half of it on my shirt. After this minor setback, I went on to work various jobs in my formative years such as washing cars, selling shoes, and working carnival games. My varied resume helped me land a spot in medical school and I'm excited to now be at the Copa. When not in the hospital you'll find me outdoors, usually climbing something.
Medical School: Midwestern University
I grew up in Pittsburgh, PA then moved to the desert in 1993. I have lived in AZ ever since; went to Highland HS in Gilbert, ASU in Tempe, Midwestern University in Glendale, and now I am training at The Copa! My favorite pasttime is naps. When I am awake and not working, I spend time with my boys: my husband and 2 cats. I enjoy good food, good beer, and the company of friends and family. I watch horror and foreign films. I love music and going to concerts; from Foreigner and Meatloaf to NIN and Rage Against the Machine to local Weezer cover bands. Road trips from Phoenix are always a good time, as LA, San Diego, Vegas, Flagstaff, and Sedona are nearby. I look forward to being a Copa-trained ED physician. Feel free to contact me with any questions!
Medical School: Medical College of Wisconsin
Hi, I'm Patrick Glynn, an Irishman, Mizzou fan, and admitted barbecue snob from Kansas City, Missouri. After bouncing around the midwest for a few years, I am excited to bring my sophisticated ways to the world's largest suburb, Phoenix. I attended the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, where I severely overdosed on winter and brats. As the sun gradually bakes my skin to a tough, leathery texture, I plan to play as much golf as possible and just enjoy the mild summer weather. Of course, I intend to keep my head on a swivel for the notoriously aggressive cougars indigenous to this area. Otherwise, I like live music, booze, playing and watching sports, and I look forward to enjoying the outdoor opportunities that living here affords. I couldn't be any happier with my move to the Copa because the people here are great, even if it"s 115 degrees outside!
Medical School: University of Arkansas
I was lucky enough to be raised in the two shining beacons that our country looks to for wisdom and liberal ideology--Texas and Arkansas. I was born in a little place called Hope (yes, the same one Clinton referenced in a thousand campaign speeches). Shortly thereafter, we moved to Arlington, Texas where I spent most of my time keeping my little brother from eating acorns (it was his thing for a while). I moved to Hot Springs, Arkansas for the crazy teenage years, and then Little Rock for medical school. Both were great places filled with wholesome, non-incestuous people.
Medical School: Saint Louis University School of Medicine
My hometown is Saint Louis. After working as an ER tech, an anatomy instructor, a wedding DJ, and a chemical dependency counselor, I finally fulfilled my dream of attending medical school. I met my wife during my first year while she was working on her PhD. We have two amazing children, and so far we are enjoying Phoenix very much. My hobbies include travel, theater, and disc golf. I am excited about the opportunities this program offers. My academic interests include outcomes, quality assurance, and critical care.

Medical School: University of Nebraska
I grew up in a small, high desert town on the Idaho/Oregon border that most people in the northwest have passed through and found no reason to stop. It was a great place to discover that I didn't want to spend my life irrigating onions and potatoes, washing dishes in a restaurant, or chasing down wildfires. So it was off to Oregon State for undergrad and then the University of Nebraska for med school. Having decided that the Oregon coast's grey skies and Nebraska's six months of winter weren't really for me, I am excited to have landed in the desert. My long suffering wife and kids, Elise (5) and Gabe (3), are enjoying all the outdoor opportunities that an endless summer brings. I am looking forward to figuring out the best places to hunt, fish, bike, and hike during all the free time that being a father and resident brings.
Medical School: University of Arkansas
I grew up in Central Florida, and went to undergrad at the University of South Florida, in Tampa FL. After getting a couple of degrees in chemical engineering and biology, I had a short stint as an engineer for a fertilizer company, and then taught high school science at Lake Region High School. I moved to Little Rock, AR to go to medical school at UAMS. After spending four great years in Arkansas, I'm thrilled to be a part of the "Copa". I continue to enjoy a wide array of activities including running, hiking, camping, and swimming. The area has a tremendous amount of new activities I've never tried but am looking forward to, i.e. snow skiing. I am look forward the unique opportunities that come with living in the desert southwest.
Medical School: Meharry Medical College
I was born and raised in Nashville, TN and completed all my education there. Before you go ascertaining how open-minded I must be, understand that I carry a strong dislike for country music and a great fondness for drunken rednecks. My immediate family all moved away little by little the last 10 years so my stint in the Dirty South was destined to come to an end. In an effort to avoid further rainy weekends (it always rains on Friday and Saturday...awesome), 100% humidity, going to the same coffee shops and seeing the same hipsters, puking at the site of any local library due to memories of 900 hour study sessions in both college and med school, not wanting to leave the house due to autistic-like memorized traffic patterns, and a strong desire to be in an arid climate closer to my West coast relatives I left my unsold home in search for sun, extreme warmth and lots and lots of newness. As luck would have it I was given a home at the Copa! In my free time I'll be exploring all the dining options Phoenix has to offer as well as the occasional dive bar and ASU house party.
Medical School: University of Arizona
Hi! My name is Beth Ranney! I claim both Mesa, AZ and Kenosha, WI as my homes, but I am mostly an Arizona Girl. I went to ASU for undergrad and U of A for medical school, and deep down I am still a Sun Devil when they battle each other out in football. I am the kid in the group that has a garden, free-range chickens, a cow, a pig, and I knit and bake in my spare time...I guess they needed a weirdo in the intern class and I filled the spot! Feel free to email me with any questions! I have worked at Maricopa on and off since I was 19 so coming back for residency was like returning home...
Medical School: University of Arizona
I am an Arizona native. I grew up in Tempe,AZ and went to The University of Arizona for undergrad and medical school. I love the southwest for the great weather, rock climbing, and Mexican food. I spend my free time practicing yoga, rock climbing, and hanging out with my awesome co-interns. I can see myself pursuing a career in academic emergency medicine, but have not ruled out community practice.
Medical School: University of Miami
I grew up in the Bay Area of California, where a large earthquake had the audacity to interrupt the world series in 1989. Then, it was off to Colorado, where I stayed for my undergraduate work, and of course by work, I mean skiing and climbing and kayaking. It was then I started my tour of the countries hottest places to live by attending med school in Miami, FL. After four years of soaking in the humidity, I decided to try to dry out, and thankfully matched here at the Copa. Loving Arizona so far, and looking forward to my 3 years here.
My name is Monique Bushman. I grew up in a small Colorado ranching community, and went to college at University of Denver. My husband and I moved to New York City for medical school at Albert Einstein College of medicine where I had my daughter Gemma.
Ok now to the truly important stuff:
I’m from Oregon, I grew up in Milwaukee and pretty much lived in the providence Milwaukee ER. My mom was a registrar there and I would l go to work with her, until I was put to work as a volunteer at age 13. I stayed in Portland, OR for undergrad and medical school going to Portland state and OHSU. In my free time I like to hangout by the pool, BBQ, go rafting, hiking or pretty much do anything outdoors.
I grew up in Portland, Oregon and spent most of my childhood outdoors. While working as an interpreter in college I decided to go into medicine and ended up in Baltimore at Johns Hopkins. I love to hike, camp, and backpack. Please email me with any questions!
My name is Daniel Haase; I was born in the small German village of Das Weiner schnitzel. When I was five, my family moved to a small town in Idaho, or was it Iowa, well same difference. I grew up eating potatoes and running through the corn fields.
I am very excited to be living in the big city now. I love to drink and share my knowledge of Iowa with others. So if you want to know useless facts about the potato state shoot me an email.
I’ve lived in the northwest pretty much my entire life. But after a month long rotation during beautiful January in Phoenix, I decided to give the desert a try. I enjoy soccer, tennis, and am a total movie-holic/rock bank nerd. Although I am clearly not as creative as some of the other guys on this page biography-wise; I would be more than happy to answer any questions about phoenix, residency, or any thing else!
I am so excited to be back in the valley after “attending” medical school in Las Vegas; there were of course no distractions there. It is great to be able to call the Copa home after so many years of bringing patients here as a paramedic.
Although residency will be challenging I am looking forward to Arizona camping, hunting, and fishing again! We have a fun group of residents and attending s here, so feel free to contact me with any questions.
I grew up in Flagstaff 2 hours north of the Copa. I headed further west southern Cali from undergrad studying chemistry and French. I then had a short stint teaching high school French before heading to medical school at Tulane in New Orleans in between the hurricanes.
In my spare time I like to hang out with my dogs, run, hike, travel, cook and bake. In fact for Halloween every year I make an anatomically correct torso cake complete bilious liver and oozing heart. I am so thrilled to be back in Arizona. Please feel free to email me with any questions.
My name is Lauren Maeda, and I was born and raised in California where I spent most of my time surfing, fleeing wildfires, or in traffic mudslides. After attending UCSB, I decided to go to Hawaii for medical school because I have to admit I look really good in a grass skirt.
I am excited to be back on the “mainland” and use my collection of short boards. Shoot me an email if you have any questions, but most likely I’ll just respond with “we don’t do it like that in Hawaii.”
I grew up all over Wisconsin and Minnesota, attending the University of Wisconsin – Madison for undergrad and medical school. After getting my car stuck in my driveway after a blizzard this past winter, I decided that I’ve had just about enough of winter. I’m looking forward to 50 degree Januarys and the “dry heat” 110 degrees of July.
I love rock climbing, traveling, and pretty much any sport; although I should be banned from stepping foot on any basketball court. When I grow up I want to be Superman… but if that doesn’t work out, Aeromedicine is my back up plan for flying around saving lives. I think that x-ray vision would be the best super power for an emergency physician, although patients probably wouldn’t believe you when you told them that they didn’t have a broken bone.
“But Doc, how do you know it’s ok? Shouldn’t you do an x-ray?”
Maybe this wouldn’t be the best super power… Ill stick with flying.
I was born and raised in the great city of Chicago; where I have always enjoyed Chicago style pizza and Italian beefs. I decided to move when 50 degrees became standard for resumption of “shorts and sandals” during the brutal Chicago winters. In comparison, 60 degrees will bring out north face gear in Phoenix.
I have several hobbies: soccer, 16 inch softball, guitar hero, biking and occasional trips to the shooting range. During residency I hope to take up Latin dancing, ninja skills, hiking and professional power napping. Feel free to contact me with medical school/residency questions.
Things that make me me:
It all started in a little fishing village called Carmelo. Beautiful beaches, the occasional good surf and no worries obviously didn’t do it for me, so it was off to Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. After finally making it back to the lift, I was grabbed from the of by the mighty Albany Medical College. Thankfully I get to thaw for a few years in the desert.
I grew up in a small town in Maine but moved to DC for undergrad to escape the cold. Unsure of what I would do with a degree of Physics, I decided to think it over in the mountains of Utah. After running into a few free ski passes for the year I waited enough tables to make 100 a week for beer and food while living in an 8 by 10 room with two other strangers. At some point in my travels I decided to be a doctor so I returned to DC for Medical school in Georgetown. I’m super excited to be back out west with a great group of people at the copa feel free to e-mail me any questions.
