Maricopa PGY1 Nicole Hodgson just returned from attending the four day ACEP Legislative Advocacy Conference and Leadership Summit in Washington D.C. There, she attended lectures on a range of topics such as psychiatric patient boarding and state responses to the opioid epidemic. Along with a small group of physicians from AZCEP, she attended meetings on Capitol Hill in the offices of Representatives Schweikert, Gallego and Sinema as well as Senators Flake and McCain, where she advocated for increased support for the mentally ill, HR 836 (EMTALA-related liability reform), increased GME funding, and increased support for EMS and trauma research. On the final day, she attended a summit with ACEP board members, state chapter presidents and chairs and medical directors of departments, where she went through a crash course on emergency department leadership.
