Congratulations to three of our residents and to Dr. Johnathan Fisher on their recent poster presentations at the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP) conference in San Diego!
Dr. Melody Glenn, current chief resident and soon-to-be EMS fellow, presented a project to test the feasibility of a new type of telemedicine emergency consultation service to help reduce unnecessary ED visits by patients in skilled nursing facilities. She was mentored by Dr. Johnathan Fisher on this project.
Dr. Christian Dameff and Dr. Vijay Kannan, both current 2nd year residents, presented a poster about respiratory effort in out of hospital cardiac arrest. When bystanders call 911 for a victim that is in cardiac arrest, they often mistake the person as breathing when in fact they are gasping. Gasping is common in cardiac arrest. This study lists the most common words bystanders use to describe presumed gasping so that dispatchers listening to the calls can identify victims in cardiac arrest sooner and start CPR instructions more quickly. Special thanks to Dr. Bentley Bobrow, faculty alumnus, for his mentorship on this project.
Congratulations to Dr. Jonathan Fisher on his recent appointment as Professor of Medicine at the University of Arizona School of Medicine!
