Teams of 3 will be navigating sections of the Tonto National Forest via canoe, mountain bike, and on foot to find checkpoints and complete wilderness medical scenarios.

Teams
Teams of 3. All team members will participate in all disciplines and medical scenarios. Teams may be made up of any gender. Racers must be 18 years of age or older. Medical knowledge is recommended but not required.

Race Format
Teams of 3 will navigate the 6 hour course via foot, canoe, and mountain bike. Teams will receive pre-marked maps with all checkpoints for the race. There will be major and minor checkpoints. Major checkpoints are mandatory and have medical scenarios. Minor checkpoints are optional and have wilderness medicine questions.

Scoring is based on a checkpoint system. Each checkpoint is worth 5 points. Each scenario completed correctly is worth 5 points. Each question answered correctly is worth *1-2 points. At the end of the race, teams are ranked initially by the number of 5 points gathered and then ranked by time.

Each checkpoint will be marked by a traditional orienteering orange and white flag. 

Required equipment
  • Bicycle with helmet (available for rent)
  • Canoe with life jacket (available for rent)
  • Water detoxification method
  • 2 L of water capacity per person
  • Whistle per person
  • Compass
  • First aid kit (including diphenhydramine)
  • Waterproof map case or 2 gallon size Ziploc bags
  • Spare tube per bike
  • Bike pump or CO2 cartridge
  • Light source per person
  • Cell phone (turned off)
  • Tonto National Park Pass per vehicle (can be purchased for $7  at local gas stations and markets)
  • Wilderness medical kit: This can include basic items that would be useful for taking care of wilderness scenarios, e.g., splinting supplies, medicines (you do not need to bring actual medicines; you can list medicines on different note cards), airway equipment, wound care, etc.

Team registration will cost $150, including canoes
Bikes – will set up rentals through local bike shops, please stay posted
