A Message from Our Research Director
MIHS Emergency Department Research is a team comprised of coordinators and experienced researchers are enthusiastic about research. We conduct studies that are federally funded, industry sponsored, and investigator initiated. Through our affiliation with the University of Arizona, Phoenix School of Medicine, our faculty serves as research mentors for medical students. In addition we have pre-medical and medical students from other medical schools involved in research. Residents are encouraged to take on original research projects that lead to publication. The MIHS Academic Research Manager assists residents with study design concept, statistical analysis, IRB submission, and regulatory requirements. There are other ways our residents and faculty contribute to emergency medicine education through podcasts, book chapters, serving as editors and publishing. We have opportunities to collaborate on research with other academic departments at Maricopa Integrated Health System. Our residents have become prominent researchers after they finish residency. The MIHS research department is a member of EMERGEncy ID Net: An emergency department–based emerging infections sentinel network. We have been part of the network for over 17 years. As part of the network we have had the opportunity to work on several large multi-center grant funded trials. Our past participation in a large multi-center trial, Strategies using Off-patent antibiotics for methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (“STOP-MRSA”), led to a publication on cellulitis in JAMA this year for Dr. Frank LoVecchio, who is one of our premiere researchers. He has brought in several multi-million dollar NIH funded projects over the past 9 years. Some of these multi-centered projects included ProACT (sepsis), BARDA (influenza), ProGReSS AKI, and ED-SAFE among others. Some of these studies have led to publications in prominent journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine and Journal of the American Medical Association. |
